Living in Lucca: What Daily Life Is Really Like

Part of our Italy Slow Travel series

Lucca Slow Travel sunset view

We arrived to Lucca on a train in the pouring rain. I can still see the big raindrops exploding on the cobblestone streets as we found our way to the property managers office. They were so pleased to see us and in no time they were escorting us to our apartment just behind the piazza.

Lucca is a city that is easy to settle into. We stayed long enough to stop thinking like visitors and start living our lives day to day. Once you understand the layout inside the walls, where people shop, and how the daily rhythm works, Lucca becomes very straightforward.

For slow travellers, retirees, and independent couples, Lucca works especially well for longer stays. It is small, flat, and predictable. After a few days, daily life feels normal rather than touristic.

Why We Chose to Stay in Lucca

We chose Lucca because it offers the feel of a historic Tuscan town without the crowds and pressure of larger cities. Everything inside the walls is walkable, and the city layout makes sense quickly.

What makes Lucca work for longer stays:

  • A compact historic centre with clear boundaries

  • Flat streets that are easy to walk

  • A strong local population living inside the walls

  • A pace of life that suits routine rather than rushing

Lucca works better when you are staying put and living normally.

What Daily Life in Lucca Is Like

Daily life in Lucca is routine-based and calm.

Mornings start quietly, with locals out for coffee, bread, and errands. By late morning, the city is more active, but it never feels overwhelming. Afternoons are relaxed, and evenings are social without being loud, with people walking the streets or the walls.

Things you quickly get used to:

  • Doing most errands on foot

  • Shopping at small local stores

  • Hearing church bells throughout the day

  • Seeing the same faces regularly

Walking or cycling the walls becomes part of everyday life rather than something you plan.

Who Lucca Is a Good Fit For

Lucca suits people who:

  • Like walking in a flat, compact city

  • Prefer smaller towns to large cities

  • Are staying at least a week or longer

  • Enjoy quiet evenings and simple routines

Lucca may not suit people who:

  • Want nightlife or constant activity

  • Prefer large cities with lots of shopping

  • Are only stopping for a very short visit

Practical Notes for Longer Stays

Getting Around:
Everything inside the walls is walkable. Bicycles are common, especially on the walls. Trains and buses make it easy to reach other parts of Tuscany.

Healthcare:
Lucca has local medical services, with larger hospitals in nearby Pisa and Florence.

Internet and Mobile:
Internet in apartments is generally reliable, and mobile coverage is good throughout the city.

Best Times to Stay:
Spring and autumn are the easiest. Summer is warm but manageable. Winter is quiet and works well for longer stays.
